Melchers Celebrates 160 Years in Asia: Singapore

Melchers Singapore: More Than Seven Decades of Building Brands and Businesses in Asia

Since its establishment in Singapore in 1954, Melchers Singapore has played an active role in the development of businesses across Southeast Asia. What began as a regional trading operation has evolved into a diversified group of distribution companies, retail businesses, joint ventures, and strategic investments spanning luxury goods, healthcare, life sciences, industrial technology, tourism, and consumer brands. Today, Singapore remains the regional hub for Melchers' activities across ASEAN and a key gateway to Asia.

A Heritage Connecting Europe and Asia
The origins of the Melchers Group date back to 1806 in Bremen, Germany. The company established its first office in Asia in Hong Kong in 1866 and became one of the earliest European trading houses to build a permanent presence in the region. Over the following decades, Melchers expanded throughout Asia, creating long-standing commercial links between European manufacturers and Asian markets.

Following World War II, Melchers rebuilt its Far East operations and established its Singapore office in 1954, followed by Malaysia in 1958. From Singapore, the company coordinated commercial activities throughout Southeast Asia, supporting international companies entering some of the world's fastest-growing markets from Indonesia to Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia.

During Singapore's industrialisation in the 1970s, Melchers helped facilitate one of the earliest major German manufacturing investments in the country through its representation of Rollei, the renowned German camera manufacturer. The Rollei project contributed to Singapore's emergence as a centre for precision manufacturing and demonstrated the country's potential as a destination for advanced foreign investment.

From its earliest days in Asia, Melchers' role extended beyond commerce. Operating between Europe and Asia required an understanding of different business cultures, management styles, and market expectations. Over generations, the company developed a reputation as an intercultural bridge-builder, helping international partners navigate not only new markets, but also the cultural and commercial complexities that accompany cross-border growth.

Building Businesses Across Asia
Today, Melchers supports international partners through a broad range of activities, including:

  • Sales and Distribution
  • Retail operations and e-commerce
  • Joint ventures and strategic investments
  • Market entry and business development
  • Logistics and supply chain management
  • Technical and after-sales service
  • Corporate and back-office services
  • Regulatory and compliance support

This combination of capabilities has enabled the company to participate directly in the growth of many businesses and brands throughout the region.

Steinway & Sons: Supporting Musical Excellence
One of Melchers' long-standing success stories is its partnership with Steinway & Sons, widely regarded as the world's premier piano manufacturer.

The company has developed the Steinway brand in Singapore and the Philippines supporting retail operations, artist programs, educational institutions, concert venues, and after-sales service. Over the years, Steinway has become the preferred instrument for many leading conservatories, concert halls, and professional musicians across the region. The partnership reflects Melchers' ability to develop premium brands through sustained market investment and long-term customer relationships.

Breitling: Building a Pan-Asian Luxury Watch Network
Few partnerships illustrate Melchers' brand-building capabilities more clearly than Breitling. Beginning in the late 1980s, Melchers became Breitling's strategic partner across Asia and spent more than three decades developing the Swiss watchmaker's presence throughout the region. The company established distribution networks across ASEAN and expanded operations into Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China. It also invested directly in retail, developing and operating Breitling boutiques and regional service centres across multiple markets.

Beyond distribution, Melchers managed sales, marketing, retail operations, logistics, training, and after-sales service, creating a fully integrated platform that supported Breitling's growth across Asia. The result was one of the most successful luxury watch networks in the region and a significant contribution to Breitling's recognition among Asian consumers.

Following Breitling's acquisition by CVC Capital Partners, Melchers sold its business in entirety to Breitling, but continued to serve as a Service Level Partner for a further five years, ensuring continuity of operations and customer support during the transition. The longevity of the relationship reflected the strength of a partnership and trust with the Breitling and our retail clients, built over more than thirty years.

Life Sciences and Healthcare
A significant part of Melchers' growth is coming from scientific, laboratory, and healthcare businesses.

In 2016, Nexus Analytics became part of the Melchers Group and has since developed into a leading life sciences platform in Southeast Asia. Nexus Analytics is the parent company of Tritech Scientific and Team Medical & Scientific (TMS), with operations across Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

Together, these businesses provide laboratory instrumentation, scientific solutions, diagnostics, and healthcare technologies to universities, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, research institutes, and industrial customers throughout the region.

Their growth has been built on deep technical expertise, application support, service capabilities, training, and long-term customer relationships, creating a strong regional platform serving the life sciences and healthcare sectors.

Creating Long-Term Joint Ventures
A distinctive characteristic of Melchers has been its willingness to invest alongside international partners and build businesses through joint ventures.

Koehler Chemie
One example is the partnership with Koehler Chemie, the German pharmaceutical and healthcare company. The joint venture combines Koehler's product expertise with Melchers' regional infrastructure, regulatory knowledge, and market access. Over time, the business has expanded across multiple Asian markets and represents a successful model of long-term partnership and shared growth.

NORQAIN
A more recent example is the partnership with NORQAIN, the independent Swiss watch brand. An early milestone was the opening of NORQAIN's second boutique worldwide in Singapore, highlighting the strategic importance of the region for the young Swiss manufacturer.

Today, the joint venture manages retail and distribution activities across Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, while continuing to expand into Vietnam and additional Southeast Asian markets. The partnership demonstrates Melchers' continued ability to identify emerging premium brands and scale them across Asia.

Pioneering Tourism and Attractions
Melchers has also contributed to Singapore's tourism sector through the development and operation of major attractions. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the company became involved in the design, development, financing, and operation of landmark visitor attractions. Most notably, Melchers lead the development and funding of the Singapore Flyer, which has since become one of Singapore's most recognisable landmarks and tourism destinations.

The company also funded in a JV with international investors, and operated the Tiger Sky Tower on Sentosa for approximately fifteen years, helping to shape the island's development as one of Singapore's leading leisure destinations.

These projects reflected Melchers' willingness to invest beyond its traditional business activities and participate directly in the development of new industries and opportunities.

Future Outlook
Today, Melchers Singapore combines more than 220 years of international heritage with over seven decades of local presence. From supporting early German industrial investment in Singapore through Rollei, to building Breitling's pan-Asian network, supporting Patek Philippe's growth in Asia, developing life science leaders such as Nexus Analytics, creating healthcare ventures with Koehler Chemie, expanding NORQAIN across the region, supporting Steinway's growth, and participating in landmark projects such as the Singapore Flyer and Tiger Sky Tower, the company has consistently focused on building businesses with a long-term perspective.

Throughout its history, Melchers has served not only as a commercial partner but also as a bridge between cultures. Asia and Europe have different business traditions, decision-making processes, and market dynamics. A key part of Melchers' success has been its ability to combine strong commercial execution with intercultural competence, helping international partners navigate complexity while building sustainable businesses across the region. By bringing together European expertise, Asian market knowledge, and trusted local relationships, Melchers has enabled companies to establish lasting positions in some of the world's most dynamic markets.

As Southeast Asia continues to be one of the world's most important growth regions, Melchers remains committed to its original mission: connecting international expertise with local opportunity, bridging cultures and markets, and helping businesses succeed across Asia for the long term. In fact not for the long term but for good.
